Many cities around the world are facing acute challenges in managing rapid urbanization— from ensuring adequate housing, security and infrastructure to support growing populations, to confronting the environmental impact of urban sprawl, to reducing vulnerability to disasters. In light of this, the global community approved the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.
Africa faces tremendous pressures in particular, due to the rapid rate of urbanization taking place. This cocktail discussion uniquely brings together the UN, private sector and city mayors to discuss these challenges along with possible solutions and opportunities for collaboration. A particular focus of the discussions will be specific proposals for collaboration that can be further elaborated upon through collaborative forums such as UCLG Africa, SALGA, and Africa Forum for Urban Safety (AFUS).
Speakers will include Leaders from Government, Cities, Private Sector and UN including:
Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Secretary General, UCLG Africa
Mayor, Cllr Zandile Gumede, Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, South Africa
