The New Urban Agenda (NUA) is a guide on how cities and human settlements can become arenas of inclusive and sustainable development. Drawing from synergies of other global and regional commitments, including but not limited to Africa’s Vision, Agenda 2063, the Africa We Want and priority implementation NUA focus areas for Africa have been endorsed by the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Public Service, Local Government, Urban Development and Decentralization Sub Committee on Urban Development and Human Settlements. Given that the NUA will be implemented at the sub-national levels, Africities 8 provides an opportunity to share and disseminate the framework to the local government constituency. Africa’s Harmonized Implementation Monitoring and Reporting framework provides guidance on the realignment and integration of the New Urban Agenda into ongoing strategies and programmes at the national and sub-national levels and how member States could implement the New Urban Agenda through leveraging the urban dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 11 among other commitments. In this event the priority areas highlighted in the Implementation framework of the NUA in Africa will be share with the local government constituency and discussions on how they can be integrated in local government plans and strategies will be held. The event will also popularize the framework and the implementation of the New Urban Agenda in Africa in a number of ways including regional, sub-regional, national and local dissemination and advocacy through the Africities. This will in turn inform and guide the development of national and local level action plans for the implementation of the NUA based on the priorities highlighted in the Regional framework. This event will provide a platform to strengthen the role of local government actors in implementing, monitoring and reporting of the NUA in Africa
