PRESENTATION OF THE SESSION

The theme of session STS 5 "Strategies for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: For a Just Transition in Africa" is proposed by REFELA, with the aim of making it a priority local strategy to ensure a global and gender-sensitive integrated transition for African cities and local and regional governments. Through this session, the aim will be to put at the heart of the debate the issue of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, which is now recognized by the international community as a key issue for the transition of cities and local and regional governments, both in Africa and throughout the world, towards good governance and sustainable, inclusive and equitable development for all. UCLG's global organisation, through the caucuses of Local Elected Women from all over the world, and the Standing Committee for Equality of UCLG's European section (CEMR-CEMR), have committed themselves to cooperate to ensure that this transition is implemented and effective. If necessary, CEMR-PLATFORMA and UCLG Africa cooperation to promote equality could lead to a draft Europe-Africa Pact of United Cities and Local Governments for Equality, as well as an approach to the elaboration of the draft Charter for Equality of United Cities and Governments in Africa. The results of this session will be presented at this STS 5 session and at the Europe-Africa meeting.
